MP3, WAV, FLAC or Opus: which audio format to choose
Five formats, one decision. It comes down to what you are going to do with the file — listen to it, edit it, or archive it.
The one-line answer
Listening on any device: MP3. Editing or mastering: WAV. Archiving without loss: FLAC. Apple ecosystem: M4A. Smallest file at equal quality: Opus.

Lossy against lossless
MP3, M4A and Opus are lossy: they discard sound the encoder judges inaudible, and that data never comes back. This is why they are small, and why re-encoding them repeatedly degrades the result.
WAV and FLAC are lossless. WAV stores raw samples and is enormous; FLAC compresses them without discarding anything, typically to about half the size. A FLAC file decodes to a bit-perfect copy of the original.
The practical consequence: every conversion between lossy formats costs quality. Converting MP3 to FLAC does not restore anything — it just wraps a degraded signal in a bigger container.
What each format costs you
For one minute of stereo audio, expect roughly 1 MB in MP3 at 128 kbps, 1.4 MB at 192 kbps, around 5 MB in FLAC, and about 10 MB in WAV. Opus reaches MP3 quality at roughly half the bitrate.
On an hour-long podcast that is the difference between 60 MB and 600 MB. For a three-minute track it rarely matters.
Compatibility, the deciding factor
MP3 plays on everything built in the last twenty-five years, including car stereos and cheap players. That universality is the reason to keep choosing it despite being technically outclassed.
Opus is superior at every bitrate but still absent from some older hardware and car systems. M4A is at home across Apple devices and increasingly well supported elsewhere.
FLAC is well handled by desktop players and modern phones, and ignored by most car systems.
Choosing by use
A podcast to listen to on the move: MP3 at 128 kbps, or Opus if your player supports it. Voice does not need more.
Music for everyday listening: MP3 at 192 kbps or above, or M4A if you live in the Apple ecosystem.
Samples to edit in a DAW: WAV, so you are not fighting compression artefacts while you work.
A collection you intend to keep: FLAC. It is lossless, it compresses, and it can be converted to anything later without a second generation of loss.

Is FLAC really better than MP3?
It is lossless, so it is technically better. Whether you can hear the difference depends on the source, your equipment and the bitrate — on a 320 kbps MP3 through ordinary headphones, most people cannot.
Does converting MP3 to FLAC improve quality?
No. The data discarded by the MP3 encoder is gone. You get a much bigger file containing exactly the same degraded audio.
Which format is smallest at equal quality?
