How to convert a YouTube video to MP3
Extracting the audio from a video sounds trivial, and mostly is — but three details decide whether you end up with a clean file or a muddy one.

What actually happens during the conversion
YouTube does not store a video as one file. It keeps the picture and the sound as separate streams, usually Opus or AAC for audio, and assembles them in the player. A converter fetches the audio stream alone, then re-encodes it as MP3.
That re-encoding is the catch. The source is already compressed, so encoding it again to MP3 is a second generation of loss. Which quality to choose

The mistakes that ruin the file
